Alcohol Treatment and College Students
April 6, 2008
College students are surrounded by alcohol. It’s more than just a fact; it’s a harsh reality that some parents, or student, try to ignore. Some students ignore it altogether.
Some students do drink, but they are careful with what and how they drink. Others let themselves become completely consumed by alcohol. The amount of alcohol drank in a night, or over a period of time, is not what to consider when thinking of alcohol treatment, however. Many students drink in college. Many of these students’ parents drank when they were in college. Simply drinking in college is not enough to consider alcohol rehab for a student. Some drink for a year or a few years, only two grow out of their ‘drinking stage’. Some, however, become dependent on the alcohol over the course of their college period. If a student “wants” to drink, it isn’t necessarily a big deal. If a student “needs” to drink, however, this should flag some warning signs for a need for alcohol treatment.
Alcohol treatment shouldn’t be seen as an extreme, however. Even students with small alcohol issues can benefit from alcohol treatment. Alcohol treatment programs can come in the form of simple meetings, such as AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), or as more severe measures such as rehab or treatment facilities. Most schools have programs through their counseling centers that can help students who may need various forms of alcohol treatment.
It all depends on the individual cases. Every situation is different for every student. For some, drinking larger amounts is less dangerous than others drinking smaller amounts. Its how they perform in school, or if they’re missing work, that can help you understand if someone needs alcohol treatment. It’s never too soon, or too late, to help someone by getting them a form of alcohol treatment.
