A drug addiction can make a friend or family member seem like a stranger. He or she can lie, steel, cheat, and hurt everyone around them. Even through all this, family and friends would gladly welcome the addict back.

It’s not because they are suckers or stupid. It’s because they know that it was the disease. It was the addiction that turned that loved one into a stranger. Most people think that the worst of the drug addiction must be felt by the addicts themselves. This is not necessarily true. A drug addict can take another hit, smoke another joint, pop another vein and forget the pain they feel. The loved ones must endure in sober disbelief as the addict once again succumbs to the slave-owner, whatever that addiction might be. When the addict reaches out and says he or she wants help, embrace them.

When that time comes, seek out a treatment center. A drug rehabilitation center can offer endless support for an addict facing the long road to recovery. The detoxification program should be the first step and it is also one of the most painful. When an addiction is starved, withdrawal sets in. This can be a very painful step, both mentally and physically, but with the right team of professionals, it can be successful. Counselors can help the addict understand what is happening with the body during the addiction, what causes cravings and urges and why the body rebels when denied the drug addiction. With this understanding can come recovery.
