Facts and Figures of Heroin Abuse and Heroin Addiction Statistics

April 28, 2008

Heroin addiction is counted as one of the most devastating drug addictions in the world today. Even though new drugs are entering the dark world of substance abuse addiction, heroin still holds its position as the leading silent killer of the world.

The statistics of heroin addiction very starkly reveal that this menace is definitely here to stay for long, unless we take proper corrective measures, and soon.In the US, the regions that have the highest density of heroin addiction include Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Newark and San Francisco. The highest rate of hospital and drug rehab admissions for treating heroin addiction is almost always recorded in the three areas of Baltimore, Boston and Newark. These are the places where about 62% to 82% of all people admitted for various kinds of drug addictions are into heroin abuse. Even in the general population of these areas, about 0.1% of people are into the heroin habit to some degree or the other. This also includes the cases that will sooner or later become fatal because of the heroin addiction.

Heroin addiction mortality rates are the highest in the regions of Detroit, Philadelphia and Phoenix. But on a better note, out of all the regions with high heroin abuse, Philadelphia is the city that is the fastest in taking remedial measures. According to a statistical survey in Philadelphia in 2001, about 73% of the people who were heroin addicts are now declared pure and sober. This is of course due to the efforts of the various heroin rehab centers within the city.
