Having a strong support system is one of the best ways to be successful in addiction treatment. If you have been able to hide your drug and alcohol abuse from many of the people who are close to you, letting them know what’s going on could provide many benefits.

Most of the time, loved ones are well aware of what’s going on. They are actually the ones trying to get the addict into a treatment center. If this is the case, you should realize that this is being done simply because they care about you. They can see how drug and alcohol addiction is hurting you more clearly than you can see it yourself.Studies show that patients who have a supportive family network when they are getting help for their addiction are more likely to maintain addiction recovery. They can encourage you to stay in a rehab program when you feel like quitting. Family and friends can help you get through the tough times in rehab by visiting you at the treatment center and talking on the phone. It’s also very beneficial if they’re willing to go through some counseling themselves. Many rehab centers offer family therapy as a normal part of the program. Loved ones will learn how to be there for you on your path to recovery in a more effective manner and avoid engaging in the patterns of codependency and enabling behaviors.

Having a support network of family and friends gives you something to look forward to after you finish addiction treatment. They can also be an additional source of accountability and help you stay on the right track during difficult times. They can be there when you simply need someone to talk to. Addiction recovery is a difficult process that shouldn’t have to be done alone.
