If you are thinking about some kind of treatment for whichever addiction you have, you must know that no addiction treatment program is going to work without a detox program being an essential element within it. In fact, the detox program may be the most part of the entire addiction treatment program.

Whether it is drug addiction, alcohol addiction, smoking addiction or simply addiction to food, the detox process is a very necessary first step. What is detox or detoxification actually? Quite simply explained, it is the method to remove the addictive substance and its metabolized forms from the body in as complete a manner as possible. This is possible only with proper restrictions from using the addictive substance, and following a therapy with medication and diet in order to bring the body back to a normal healthy form.

During the detox period, the body will violently react because of the substance being kept away from the system in such an abrupt manner. This is necessary too, because it is only after the withdrawal can it be ascertained that the addictive substance is completely expelled from the body.

The detox is also important for the patient to feel as a psychological effect that the incriminating substance is now completely out of the body system. That provides an encouragement to the person for the further cure and continuing care.

One subtle aspect of the detox program is that it allows the patient come closer to friends and family, and they become much more responsible and understanding to the patient’s problem. This kind of intervention is very necessary if the addiction treatment has to have lasting effects on the patient’s system.
