Drug and alcohol addiction treatment is a very trying time for everyone involved. The addict, family members, and other loved ones are all going through a transitional period. Because the addiction itself usually has a huge effect on family dynamics, the treatment program will affect them as well. Oftentimes, family members want to help the addict successfully recover in any way possible. There are a number of ways to accomplish this.

The importance of family support during rehab treatment should not be underestimated. Just knowing that you still care about them and want them to succeed will do wonders for an addict’s self-esteem, which is an important element of addiction treatment. Family members are often invited to the rehab facility for special events, visits, or counseling sessions. Being available and always attending these, whether one really wants to or not, lets the addict know that you are there for them. Family counseling sessions are especially important. If the rehab center is simply too far away to visit, phone calls are the next best option.

Family members can also help the addict by helping themselves. By being physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy, they can be there as needed to provide the best possible support through addiction treatment. This means being available to help the person with drug and alcohol abuse issues, but not letting it take over and drain every ounce of energy in one’s body.

Offering support during the difficult times of addiction treatment is just as important as being there when the individual has a success. This will reassure the addict that they are in the correct place for an intervention and should continue on the difficult road of addiction recovery. Try not to antagonize them or get involved in arguments during this time. Addiction treatment should be as positive an environment as possible.
