The Extent of Methamphetamine and Crystal Meth Addiction in Kansas

May 28, 2008

The most significant reason that makes methamphetamine and crystal meth a major problem in Kansas is because of the profuse availability of these substances. Most of the methamphetamine in Kansas is locally produced in small laboratories that are operating clandestinely throughout the state. These small labs are organized by families themselves and using normal everyday things like cough syrup, antifreeze, lantern fuel, etc. There are two methods to prepare methamphetamine and crystal meth in Kansas. The older method using red phosphorus is still used, but recently the Birch method has become popular in the state too. Most of the home labs that are producing meth and crystal meth in the state are within the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. However, outer states like Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska are also contributing to methamphetamine addiction in Kansas because the chemical produced in these states is also filtered into the state of Kansas.

Some animal supplies are used in the production of methamphetamine. Iodine tincture which is used for disinfecting wounds in animals is used in obtaining methamphetamine. MSM is another supplement that is used in the horses’ diets, but is also used as an agent in the preparation of methamphetamine. In recent times, the sale of both iodine tincture and MSM has been reported in large numbers within certain areas. This is a very suspicious trend indeed.

It is difficult to nab the home labs that produce meth and crystal meth within Kansas, because they keep moving around the state. Also, some of these labs are located far away from the civilized areas.

The prevalence of methamphetamine and crystal meth addiction in Kansas can be clearly indicated by the large amount of methamphetamine available in Dodge City, Garden City and Topeka. Most of these places have high grade methamphetamine imported from Mexico.
